Printable go-bag checklist (Ready.gov list plus what Japan adds)
Check items off as you pack. The first two groups are Ready.gov's lists, worded as on Ready.gov; the last two are items from the Japanese government's checklist that the U.S. lists don't name (our translation). Your checks stay on this page only: nothing is saved or sent, and they reset when you close it. You can print the list and keep it in the bag.
Tips
- Weight: Japan's government suggests assuming an adult man can carry about 15 kg (33 lb), an adult woman about 10 kg (22 lb), and children and older adults about 6 kg (13 lb). Split the load.
- Packing: Ready.gov suggests airtight plastic bags inside one or two easy-to-carry containers, such as plastic bins or a duffel bag.
- Where: prepare supplies for home, work and cars, and make sure everyone knows where the home kit is (Ready.gov).
- Upkeep: replace expired items and re-think your needs every year (Ready.gov).
For the reasoning behind each list, see Emergency kit vs. Japanese go-bag. To size water and food at home, use the household water and food calculator.
Everyday
Twice a year, go through this list and check your kit's food, water, batteries and children's sizes.
When it counts
When you have to leave, you can see at a glance what's packed and what's missing.
